English Media Club

Upon my appointment, I was given the responsibility of guiding the school’s media unit. Over the past few years, I guided my students to conduct programs especially touching the area of compering. However, I changed the routine ongoing processes of the media club and introduced them in a new format.

This is how I did it. First, I named the unit the “Golden Flashes”🌟, and I informed my expectations in a project proposal to the principal. The objectives of the media unit mentioned in my project proposal are as follows,

      • To build communication skills.
      • To interpret media texts.
      • To develop critical thinking.
      • To analyse media messages.
      • To get used to the technical instruments.

After receiving the approval, I started selecting students through an interview. The criteria I used in assessments included, pronunciation, audibility, clarity of the text and tone. The interview was voluntary and the best students were selected. Students around 10 to 12 were selected from each class. Meetings were held and the students were taught with how to maintain a media book with scheduled work, how to organize a program, and how to select items to make the program attractive and meaningful.

Every Friday we conduct our ‘Morning English Program’ from 7.00 am to 7:30 am. The members of the English Media Unit participate to this program. It is led by a leader who appointed by the media unit. The leader has the responsibility of aligning the program. Each member has to present two items addition to compering. Items can be a morning thought, a speech, a story, a poem, riddles and any item that can give a message to the listeners. Songs are played during the breaks and students take turns presenting their items.

Students do practice throughout the year and they receive the opportunities of compering any function conduct in English medium. This year we have done many events and the “The Golden Flashes” did their work efficiently and perfectly. I wish to reward them a certificate at the end of this year as a token of appreciation.

How the Media Club Project help the students in Real-life usage of English?

I believe that this project helps our students to develop their soft skills which can apply in real life situations. By improving communication, the students learn to express ideas confidently and clearly in day-today communications. It is expected that, they’ll be so smart and responsible for their work. Especially in the digital world, they will be armed with a sound knowledge on handling technical instruments and will be well-prepared for a modern workplace with future learning opportunities.

How I was inspired?

As an English teacher, I guided media units in all school where I worked. Once our school principal conducted a workshop for us on some school projects and his ideas inspired me to present the media club in such a methodical way. In my project proposal presentation, I shared my thoughts and objectives to emphasize this unit as an essential learning need for the students who are preparing for the digital world. I got many opportunities to prepare students for various events, and I’m so proud of my student’s growing confidence in public speaking.
