Spell Master Competition
The ‘’Spell Master Competition’’ is an annual educational program that we conduct in our school specifically for Grade 3 and Grade 4 students. We had the competition for last three years, and the process took five (05) months to complete.
During
the programme, the
students were able to develop many skills such as:
- Enhancing vocabulary skills through
learning new words.
- Improving the spelling accuracy.
- Gaining confidence in
speaking in front of an
audience.
- Encouraging teamwork among students.
At the beginning of the programme, each student received 50
words from the first two units. Teams of ten students
were formed in each class. The selected students practiced additional words from the first four units. After that,
the battle rounds were started
with teams based on lots drawn. While the
battle rounds was going
on new units were added with more words and an outstanding performance round was added too. From the students who have unselected,
five students were randomly selected according to their registration number for
the outstanding performance round. According
to the results, three teams were selected for the semifinals while two teams were selected for the finale.
Each class was named
by using a name of a flower 💮(e.g. Grade 4 A-
Apple blossom, grade 4- D- Daffodils etc.)
and the main hall was decorated under that particular
flower theme. Spelled words were visible for the audience while the competition
going on. All the students cheered for their teams calling
by the names of the flowers. The enthusiasm and the curiosity came from the audience were unbelievable. (We got to
know that the parents had conducted zoom
meetings to practice their children.) We had two
rounds for the finale continued for two days
with an outstanding performance round. Each
competitor had to spell out 10 words and outstanding performer had to spell
five words. Marks were added for both days and the winner was selected.
Grand finale was ceremoniously held with
the participation of chief guest, presenting medals and trophies: bronze🥉 for the third place, silver🥈 for the second and gold 🥇 medals along with a trophy for the
winners.
How
the spell master competition helps students in real-life use of English
The Spell Master competition positively influences
students’ real-life use of English by strengthening their vocabulary,
spelling, accuracy and confidence in communication. As they learn and apply new
words, students develop better writing. The practice of spelling improves
pronunciation and public speaking confidence, too. This program supports
lifelong learning and enhances their ability to engage in an English-rich world.
How I received inspiration?
Our principal discussed the
film “Akeelah and the Bee” with us and emphasized the
importance of accurate spelling. Therefore, the structure of this
programme was designed to fulfil that vision. The teachers
were given with different responsibilities. I
was assigned with selecting initial sets of words and
preparing mark sheets. I compered the ceremony too. I was so encouraged to continue this
program, as I could see how the children mastered spellings, while
developing their personality skills. I believe that the ‘’Spell Master Competition’’ is an educational program that
should be implemented in every school.
